The CJ2K Saga

Today marks the 13th day of Chris Johnson’s holdout from the Tennessee Titans training camp.  I feel prone to report about this because this is a situation where a team is able to get over on a player.  As seen in years past, the Titans have never been a team to offer big money to franchise players (as seen by the happy meals they offered to Albert Haynesworth to retain him).

With the 24th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Titans selected Johnson out of East Carolina University. Now at the age of 26 and entering his 4th year in the league, Johnson within his prime is set to have another break-out year.  He has been the franchise player offensively for the Titans since he entered the league and has been the force behind the Titans strong rushing attack.  But there is one problem concerning Johnson and the purpose behind why he is holding out of camp for a new deal.

As a franchise player, Johnson expects for the Titans to pay him like one.  Johnson is entering the 4th year of his 5 year rookie contract and more information on how that deal was constructed, visit the following link.  But the point of the matter is that Johnson is underpaid.  The Titans say that they will not talk to Johnson about his salary situation until he reports to camp.  I’m asking myself, why would the team demand that and what happens if he gets injured?  My comrades and I often laugh at many of Johnson’s tweets because they just don’t make any sense, but this for one makes sense for Johnson.

It’s funny to me how the Carolina Panthers took care of their players and free agents this off-season.  As soon as they were able to, they signed their key players.  The Titans on the other hand haven’t really made a splash in free agency and if I took a look at their salary cap numbers I’m sure they would be well under.  So this is just a situation of the owners trying to play their hands and get as much out of Johnson for the least amount of dollars.  And what makes it sad is that historically Johnson only has another 4 years of productivity left.  Therefore, I agree with his stance to go get paid NOW.  Earn as much money as you can, while you can!

I wonder if the NFLPA could have put something in the new CBA to help guys who holdout. It seems that players like CJ2K and DJax have no power to try to get paid fairly.

Why I am impressed with CJ2K. Its easy to holdout when you’re not losing anything. But CJ2K is losing a year of credit to free agency by holding out. To sacrifice a benefit for what you believe in catches my attention. Coon salute to you CJ2K

Give it about 3 games and he CJ2K will get his fair deal. This team is nothing without him.
